Alfred Geo. Seagrove - Canadian Experditionary Force
« on: Tuesday 28 February 12 09:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I stumbled across the attestation document into the Canadian overseas Expeditionary Force of a distant rellie Alfred George Seagrove.

Could some one suggest what the street name is 823 ???????, Woodstock , Ont
also his Trade Machine ????????

& one for the military experts , his previous service reads I think,
3 1/2 years 1st Batt R.B (Royal Berkshire's?)
1 Yr 1st Batt R.H.C.R. ( Royal Household Calvery Regiment????)
2 yrs 1st Batt 1st R.G. (Royal Garrison Regiment as per the 1901 census)

As I cant find his civilian emigration ( or his UK service record)  to Canada I presumed he was stationed there with the Royal Garrison Regiment & chose to stay as His wife & children emigrated in  late 1911, but, according to web sources the 1st regiment were not stationed at Halifax only the 5th regiment ?

Hi PaulC120

Could it be "Dufferin Street Woodstock Ontario"?

And his Trade "Machine Hand"?

Regards

Z :)

Ministry of Labour - Employment Standards
130 Dufferin Avenue, 4th Floor, London, ON N6A 5R2

Found this address on the Woodstock website.  So Dufferin certainly exists today

Hi Z &  shanghaipanda

thanks for the replies, I had convinced myself that it started with a W but now I look at it you are right its clearly Dufferin Street which from google street view looks to be a pleasant residential street.

Thanks

His UK attestation forms and discharge papers are available on FindMyPast.

To summarize (and to explain your abbreviations!):
16/05/1890 attested Depot Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment
21/08/1890 transferred 2nd Bn Royal Berks
17/09/1891 transferred 1st Bn Royal Berks (at Malta from now until 04/03/93)
08/08/1893 discharged medically unfit

31/03/1900 attested 1st Bn Royal Home Counties Reserve Regiment.
01/05/1900 transferred 2nd Bn RHCRR
26/03/1901 attested 1st Bn Royal Garrison Regiment
14/04/1903 attested 3rd (Reserve) Bn Royal Berkshire Regiment (militia)
14/04/1907 reengaged with 3rd Bn Royal Berks
21/04/1910 discharged

The Royal Reserve regiments were formed in Feb 1900 for garrison duties to enable regular battalions to be sent to the Boer War.
In 1901 the various Royal Reserve regiments were combined to form the Royal Garrison Regiment.

His service with 3rd Bn Royal Berks from 1903 to 1910 would, I think (not certain!), have been part-time only - six months' training at the beginning, then only an annual training camp once a year thereafter. And only in the UK! He would not have served in Canada in that period.

Hi Adrian

what can I say but thanks, that's brilliant, that fits perfectly with the baptisms of his children  from the parish records, I was puzzled how he was giving civilian occupations in 1902, 1904 & 1906,and again in 1911,  if he had been in military service. Was this from the WO96 militia record on FindMyPast? I could not see a WO97 for him.

Many Thanks

Hi Paul,
All his papers are lumped together in the one batch in WO96. There are 12 pages:
1-4 service in RHCR/RGR 1900-1903
5-8 service in 3rd Royal Berks 1903-1910
9-12 service in Royal Berks regulars 1890-1893

Hi Paul

Just seen your posting about Alfred George Seagrove. I have been doing some research work for a family member in Canada into her Seagrove family which comes from Berkshire. Can you PM me to see if there is a connection between our respective Trees.

Many thanks
