I suggest that you write/email to the authority looking after the cemetery giving as much info as poss. (name date of burial etc). They should give you details og grave.

If you do not have address it will probably be found by searching online.

Good luck

Hi Sarah,

The map attached below shows where Section O is located. (I can't remember if the very narrow strip is still section O.)

If you're driving, you'll enter the cemetery via Gartocher Terrace and it's just a case of following the windy road until you find your way up to the top part which runs alongside Hallhill Road. Section O is 'opposite' the Jewish section.

If you're walking, then it's best to enter via the pedestrian entrance on Hallhill Road.

When you get there, you'll see that there's a lot of stones (particularly at the ends of rows) which have been splattered with what looks like white paint. This appears be a 'quaint' way of marking sections.

Do you have a Lair Number? If so, then it would be a good idea to check the Commonwealth War Graves Database and see if you can find one of their burials nearby. There's almost certain to be a stone on these graves and if you can identify one of those, then your task will be made slightly easier.

Good Luck!!  :)

Hi,
I am researching my great grandmothers grave in Sandymount Cemetery in Glasgow. I am planning on looking for it when I go to visit in July/Aug. Her grave is located in section R and I have the lair #.

I am traveling by bus to the cemetery from the center of Glasgow city. I think bus service 40? will take me to the Hallhill entrance?  Is there a closer entrance to section R? and how would I get there?

Also, are the plots numbered somehow. How do we find the lair number? not sure if there is a stone marking or not.

Thanks for any help. - Joy

Hello Joy,

Below is an aerial view of Sandymount and you'll see that Section R isn't really any closer to the pedestrian entrance on Hallhill Road or the vehicular one on Gartocher Terrace.

Sections R & S are together on the same 'block' as you'll see.

Once you reach the correct part of the cemetery, have a good look for any numbers you can find on the bases of any of the stones. Some will have numbers, others won't, but these will be the lair numbers and if you can find a few, you might be able to work out which ways the lairs run in each row.

Alternatively, visit the Commonwealth War Graves Site and look for any Commonwealth War Graves listed in Section R. With a bit of luck, one of them might have a number near'ish to the number of the lair you are looking for and it's much easier looking for one of these stones and make that your starting point.

See: http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead.aspx?cpage=1&sort=name&order=asc

The above link should take you to the first page for Sandymount.

On this CWGC database, rather than call a Section a Section, they are called Compartments, so any you come across in Section R, take a note of the details of a couple you think might be nearby then try and find them first as because they're so recogniseable, they're usually easily found. (The reference can also just be listed as R.9999 or whatever.)

Good Luck!

Thank you so much for the information and map. This will help a great deal in my search.

Just one questions?  The directions say to take bus service 40 travelling in the direction of Easterhouse and it will pass the rear pedestrian entrance of the cemetery on Mansionhouse Drive.  Which entrance is that? I don't see it on the map. Is it the Hallhill entrance? Just wondering. Would you happen to know the bus stop for the cemetery?

And on an un-related subject, what is the cost for the bus?

Thanks so much - Joy

Mansionhouse Drive will be Hallhill Road and I think the bus stop is directly outside the entrance. Just ask the bus driver - he/she will know. Make sure you tell him/her that it's Sandymount Cemetery and not Glenduffhill Cemetery which is about half a mile further along the same road (A Jewish Cemetery).

I have no idea how much the ticket will cost - I imagine no more than a few pounds at most.

Joy regards the bus the cost for a all day ticket is around £4.30 (stated on the side of the bus windows) which allows you to have as many journeys (on the same companies bus's) as you wish for that day but you need to have the exact money as there is no facility on board to give you any change you must state to the driver you wish a all day ticket then place the Exact money into a chute before he will give you your ticket which you retain and show to the driver on any subsequent journeys. Hope you find what your looking for H.

Joy, just for info, the bus stop is on Hallhill Rd, almost opposite entrance. The service 40 bus has now been replaced either by 60 or 60a, both going to Easterhouse.
