MARY CONNELL
« on: Monday 27 February 12 16:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am stuck with an ancestor who I believe was born in Lancashire, but i don't know where. She appears on the 1841 census living on Boardman Street, Oldham cum Prestwich, Lancs. With her are Son's William, John, Peter and Daughter's Jane and Mary.
There is no Father. I believe my ancestor was Daughter Jane Connell.(1829).
Mother Mary is born IN COUNTY ie Lancashire, but all the children are born in London Middlesex. (I know this from later census's). Jane married a James Hudson and lived in Ardwick Manchester. I can't find Mary after the 1841 Census. She says she was born in 1796. There is a death of a James Connell in Manchester in 1837 and he was born in 1775 - not known where.

What I am trying to find is the children's Father and Mary's Maiden name. I can find no Christening / baptism records.
Any idea's anyone??
Thanks Jan

Jane maried James Hudson at Manchester Collegiate Church now the cathedral in 1847. The marriage certificate will as patrish says have the father's name on it.

There's a burial record of a Mary Connell 28 June 1847, age 46, Manchester Cathedral (formerly Collegiate Church) Which could be the Mary you are looking for (even though there is a difference in birth year as per the 1841 census which was usually rounded)

The James you found is also buried there 27 June 1837, age 62.

Let's get things straight!

The 1841 census does NOT show any relationship of one person to another - it simply lists the people in the house/dwelling.
You can infer that they are mother/father/son/daughter, but there is no proof!

Also ages were rounded down to a multiple of 5 years.
Mary's age was stated to be 45 - so she could have been any age from 45 to 49.

Finally, ages on death certificates are those quoted by the informer - they may well be wrong! ;D

Thank you so much everyone for replying to my message.
It's all really useful information and I will try and get hold of the marriage certificate which, with luck, should make things a bit clearer. Thanks also for the marriage and death dates .
Many Thanks once again
