Does anyone know this girl's name
« on: Saturday 25 February 12 20:17 GMT (UK) »
In tracing my gypsy ancestors I have come across the following
a daughter recorded in the parish record as FAMMELO Wells.
In the previous generation a daughter FAMMALOTHA Wells.
The parish records dont specify that these were traveller families, although I believe their descendents were.
Usually its possible to guess a name even if misspelt, but this has me beaten.
Has anyone got a clue?

Can`t think what it might be but just as an example in my family there is an uncle of my father`s

named "Hardome" on census returns , however he really was named "Ferdinand", on birth certs etc.

Could the person you are researching have a name so misspelt ? .Perhaps Pamela or Penelope.

On the other hand it could be a relatively rare name such as Parthenope( Florence Nightingale`s sister was burdened with that!)
                                                    Best of luck. Viktoria.

When were they born?
Perhaps the census returns offer clues?
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

ancestry has the baptisms of a Fammelo and  a Fammalotha Wells dau of George and Jane Wells. Both are down as taking place on the 22 June 1777 at Sturminster Newton Dorset.
So it is likely that it is two variants of the same name?

Ah so there is another I haven't found yet :)

The other one is at Tisbury Wilts 1809. Sometimes it appears as FENILO Wells. Yes I am fairly sure they are variations of the same name.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the replies especially the last one. Was this a gypsy couple I wonder? As names can so often be followed through the generations I thought the first 2 might be the same family-both Wells, the later Fammelo was definitely of a gypsy family.
