hi,,just looked at the reference,,,it says HER surname was Monaghan or Pope. ;)

From freebmd
Monaghan  James E P  ( Spouse Carr)
Pope  James E  (Spouse Carr)
S.Shields  10a 1539 [/s]

Just seen your other amended post gortonboy  ;D

I wonder if he was illegitimate.

He may be known by his birth name and that of his mother's husband who may or may not  be his father.

He was either Monaghan, James E P    or Pope, James E.

Could he have been James E Pope Monaghan? (either with or without a hyphen?)

In column 2 ("Name and Surname") if either of the parties has adopted or is commonly known by a  name or surname, other than his or her true name or surname, both names should be recorded with the word 'otherwise' between them.

I think Monaghan is James' mother's maiden name. There's a possible marriage in Newcastle in December quarter 1886 on FreeBMd with a James Pope and Mary Monaghan on the same page.

A birth of James Edward Pope was registered in Tynemouth district in September quarter of 1887, and James E Pope aged 3 appears with parents James and Mary in Longbenton, Nothumberland in the 1891 census.  Neighbours are Peter and Mary Monaghan, who would be old enough to be Mary's parents.

It doesn't look as though James Edward is illegitimate, so perhaps he just chose to use his mother's name for some other reason.
