Richard and Jemima Harvey - Uckfield, Sussex

I've been banging my head against this one for ages, now.

- Richard Harvey (my 3xGrt-grandfather) and his wife Jemima lived in Uckfield, SSX from at least the 1831 census onward.  Confirmed in the censuses until they died in 1874 and 1867, respectively.  Since all of their children were baptised in Uckfield, that probably makes it from 1813 onward.
- I inherited some work from my late uncle that showed Richard marrying Jemima <Adams> in Uckfield in 1812, but I don't know his sources and I haven't been able to confirm either the marriage date and place or Jemima's maiden name.
- My uncle's info showed Richard being born abt 1790 in Uckfield, but I haven't been able to confirm that.  In fact, I rather doubt that he was born in Uckfield, itself.
- My uncle's info also showed Jemima <Adams> being born abt 1791 in Maresfield (Mayfield appears in one census), but I've failed to find any Jemima born about then close enough to Maresfield, Mayfield or Uckfield to be a likely candidate.

They had five children (Elizabeth, Richard, Harriet, William and John) in Uckfield — and from there on, my data are pretty solid.  But I've really hit a wall at Rich & Jem.  ANY help would be much appreciated!

Hi Phil, I have just looked in the records of Sussex Family History Group and found a Richard Harvey baptised on 31/1/1790 in Uckfield. His parents were Richard and Elizabeth. No luck so far on Jemima Adams. Poppyann

So, apparently, Richard WAS born in (or very near) Uckfield.  I suspect that he had at least one brother (another John, I think) living in town at some point, too.

Clearly, I'm going to have to move back to England if I want to get any farther with this family!  (My parents abducted me when I was two years old ... didn't ask me for my opinion or anything!)

If I pay my £13.65 to join the Sussex Family History Group, would I be able to get into the records that you mentioned?  I don't want to be asking others to do my research for me, too often.  (Takes some of the fun out of it!)

I realize that I left that bit of the picture unfinished.  There were some (likely related) Harvey burials in Uckfield:
- Henry (age 29) in 1824
- Philadelphia (age 24) in 1825
- William (age 76) in 1837

I thought I remembered finding an older John Harvey (not the son) in one of the censuses ... but I can't find it, now.

Many thanks!  I did not have the actual marriage date, only the year ... with no idea of my uncle's sources!  And "Mima" Adams sounds like a very good possibility!  I've seen <Adams> [sic] elsewhere, in a FamilySearch tree but, again, they seemed unsure and there was no source cited.  Possibly the shortened version of the name was off-putting.  I'll definitely follow that one up!

That witness, Mary FROST, is interesting.  One of Richard & Jemima's sons married Charlotte Yeomans of Maresfield, whose mother Sarah I have penciled in as a Frost.  Hmmm.....

I had indeed joined the SFHG by the end of yesterday.  Well, I made the online payment but now have to wait for my membership package to arrive (here in Canada,) it seems.  No I.D. yet.

oops!  I just re-read your post, omega.  Although I read the "BOTP" the first time, it didn't click: that would mean that Jemima was not living in Maresfield at the time.  I suppose she could have moved to Uckfield earlier ... but it's not all that likely, is it?   Still, I _think_ there was only one Richard Harvey of the right age in town, at the time, so it almost has to be the right marriage.  And the censuses definitely show her as being born in Maresfield (1861 census) or Mayfield (1851 census.)

Hmm ... now I'm going in mental circles.  (not uncommon, these days)   Am I missing something?
