Beckett Street Cemetery Leeds
« on: Thursday 23 February 12 15:36 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I found the burial of my 2x great grandmother Lily BRECKON in the Beckett Street Cemetery. She was buried in 1899 but an age or date of burial is not included.  I found her burial on the NBI. Is there anyway of finding out more in regards to a burial record or is what I found on the NBI all there is?

I would appreciate any thoughts on this.

Thank you,
Tamara in Canada

Hopefully someone who would be willing to look at the records in Leeds will be able to help you - unfortunately I don't live there  :'( or I would do it for you, by going to either the Central Library or West Yorkshire Archive Service.

Full details are available, which will give you date of burial, at least an age and possibly an address and other details such as "daughter of", "wife of" or occupation.

Hope someone picks this up  :) :)

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

There is also a website for the Friends of Beckett Street Cemetery.  I understand they will do searches for you, and as far as I can see they are cheaper than cems.crems.

As has been said earlier no age or date of burial other than year 1899.
The burial entry is No 50909 and grave No 24405.
No transcription of headstone available in records.
(freebmd reports Lily died June 1899 aged 24years)

Thank you to everyone for your replies! I bought a membership for the Yorkshire Indexers because I have lots of ancestors from Leeds and living in Canada it's a very inexpensive way to obtain information! As stated above, there isn't much information other than what I had, but I was fascinated to learn that Lily was buried with 13 other people. Is this a common practice? I believe Lily lived in the Leeds workhouse but have been unable to prove that as of yet. If she was an inmate, would that explain why she was buried with others unrelated to her? Was she buried with others to save costs? Please enlighten me if you can! I am so curious to know more!!

Thank you again...

The grave as you have found was a communal one, that is to say they dug the hole to allow for many.
This was a common practise where money was not forthcoming.
