1861/1871 census for Smetzer at St George Hanover Square
« on: Sunday 15 May 05 01:31 BST (UK) »

I am looking for the family of Benjamin & Mary Smetzer.  Benjamin was born in Cripplegate and would be aged 40 in 1861. I don't know if there are any children in '61 but there is at least 2 ( Blanche & Selby) in '71

Thanks
Robyn Simpson

This is the only match I can see on 1861 and as you haven't posted details from1871 I have nothing to cross reference it with.

If this isn't your man perhaps we could have 1871 information. ;)

The image is dreadful and address looks like 90 Oxford or Orford Street

Benjamin Smitzer 1829  London, Middlesex,  Head Hosiery Salesman  Chorlton upon Medlock  Lancashire
Mary Smitzer 1826  London, Middlesex,  Wife Artifical Florist  Chorlton upon Medlock  Lancashire
Ada Bertha Smitzer 1860  Manchester Daughter  Chorlton upon Medlock  Lancashire
Mary Fitzgereald 1840  Ireland Servant  Chorlton upon Medlock  Lancashire

They obviously get around judging by daughter's birthplace

That is my man.

I don't have anymore info for 1871 except that there are three children by then  Ada Bertha born 1860, Selby born 1863 and Blanche born 1867. Maybe they are at Pimlico as this is where the 1881 census says that Blanche was born. By the 1881 Benjamin is dead and Mary and the 3 children are at St George Bloomsbury, London.

Thanks
Robyn

Sorry, I got mixed up - it was very late last night - I thought you had found them on 1871 :P

I will have another look for you but from memory there wasn't one single listing.

Thank goodness for unsual names!
1871

Wesley House - no other details

Benjamin Smelzer 1829  City, Middlesex,  Head Hosiery Warehouseman  Battersea  London
Mary Smelzer 1827  Marylebone, Middlesex,Wife  Battersea  London
Ada Smelzer 1861  Manchester, Lancashire,  Daughter  Battersea  London
Selby Smelzer 1863  Manchester, Lancashire,Son  Battersea  London
Blanche Smelzer 1868  Pimlico, Middlesex,  Daughter  Battersea  London

Doesn't help when they are mistranscribed and birthplaces varify.

Selby Smetzer is a bit of a mouthful to say but he has won the day ;D
The bloke who wrote on the original image forgot to cross his 't''

Do you have Benjamin's death reference and Blanche's marriage reference?

I noticed a posting for a Thomas Smetzer last night but now can't find it. Are you still looking for him?
