Grosvenor Gardens?
« on: Monday 20 February 12 16:19 GMT (UK) »
My ancestors have put their address, on several birth and marriage certificates, in the early 20th century, as Grosvenor Gardens, Harolds Cross.   I can't find this anywhere.  I can't see the family in either of the censuses either.

I would be grateful for any ideas.

On the 1911 census of Ireland list of streets in the area, there is only Grosvenor Place, Road and Square, as I'm sure you've seen.
Broughshane, Co. Antrim.
 Robinson, Montford, Lily, Simpson.

I had a look in Thom's 1914 - and there's no separate street listed by that name, but there is one entry at the end of the listing for Grosvenor Square adjacent to number 89 that looks like it may be connected :

   James Byrne, Grovernor Garden

sounds like the name of a house, rather than street..

This would have been located on the south of the square near the exit road to Leinster Rd.

The family giving Grosvenor Gardens as their address was O'Reilly.  There are no mothers' names on the marriage certificate.

Is it likely that they wouldn't have completed the census forms?

marriage certs just show father name and occupation - no details of mothers.

The addresses on marriage records is that of the bride and groom at the time of marriage - not necessarily the family home.

Can you post some details - names, occupations and dates ?

Marriage in January 1918 between William Joseph O'Reilly, aged 20, an engineer
address Grosvenor Gardens, Harolds Cross, father Michael O'Reilly, a gardener
 and
Eveleen O'Mahony, aged 19, address 132 Harolds Cross, father Daniel O'Mahony an agricultural expert.

I can find the O'Mahonys in the censuses and on irish genealogy but I can't get any further back with the O'Reillys.

There is also a birth certificate in 1918 and a marriage certificate in 1934 giving Grosvenor Gardens as the address.

1914 : 132 Harold's Cross - D. O'Mahony

1930 & 1938: Grosvenor Garden, Grosvenor Square - Peter Kennedy

Doesn't look like your O'Mahonys were the principle occupants at the address, maybe they worked there and lived on the premises ? - unless of course this "Grosvenor Gardens" relates to a different location, but somewhere close to the square does seem likely..

I can see a few Michael [O']Reillys on the 1911 returns with gardener and similar as occupation - but the only one that seems close is the family in Ballyhimock townland in Co. Cork  - see : Michael [O']Reilly, gardeners

just spotted a possible reference to your O'Reillys in the 1927 edition - looks to be a residence that is part of, or next to, Grosvenor Garden on Grosvenor Square.

The last section of the listing for the square is as follows :

  88 Jas. McBreen
  89 Wilson Kelly
  Grosvenor Garden - Peter Kennedy
     "                       - Michl. O'Reilly

The dittos usually indicate a shared address. I double checked the other listings and there's no mention of this additional entry in 1930 or 1938.

Working back from that I found the same listings in 1921 and 1923 - (i.e. Peter Kennedy and Michl. O'Reilly).
