Hi Brendan,

This looks a possible death for Sarah :

Date of death : 28th July 1912
Sarah Bone, aged 86 years
Place : Bromley Workhouse, Stepney Union

Hi

That would be a pauper's burial at the City of London Cemetery, Aldersbrook Road, Manor Park E12. The cemetery's official address is now Manor Park but previously it was part of Little Ilford. For other workhouse deaths which are not pauper funerals the workhouse register says the body 'was taken by friends'.

The London Metropolitan Archives holds the workhouse admission and discharge registers for St Leonard's Street Bromley-by-Bow workhouse. There are earlier admission and discharge registers online on Ancestry none of which are indexed and are time consuming to search, but they seem all pre C20th for this workhouse.

The LMA records

◦St Leonard's Street Workhouse — Admissions and discharges (1863-1913); Births (1866-1923); Deaths (1866-1923); Creed registers (1874-1923).

Please reassure your father and tell him not to be shocked, it certainly isn't as uncommon as you might think. Having said that, I have to admit it doesn't make you feel very comfortable when you find where they were.

I discovered my 2 x great grandfather had also died in the workhouse. Many of these places housed an infirmary, if they had no one who was able to care for them for whatever reason, this was the only place for them to go.

Hi

Many workhouse infirmaries became national health hospitals in 1948 though not this one.

http://www.nhshistory.net/poor_law_infirmaries.htm

A possible death registration for him. His death certficate will give you information on whether he died in the workhouse but if so not how long he had been there prior to his death - he might have gone out and returned at the time of his final illness, if he did die there.

Deaths Dec 1918
Bennett  Samuel J  72  Poplar  1c 865

The workhouse infirmaries (along with the asylums) also housed the elderly who needed care which might also include those suffering from illnesses such as dementia for instance.
