Thomas JACKSON - Bury St Edmunds
« on: Sunday 19 February 12 07:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have been researching my ancestors for some time now and have had great success on many branches.  However I have hit a brickwall with regard to my 3 x great grandfather Thomas JACKSON who was born in Bury St Edmunds in 1810 (21st Oct is his likely christening date).

I know he married someone called Matilde or Matilda, who was born in Mendham in 1811.  I believe Mendham is in Suffolk, although I have seen references to Norfolk.  I am desperately trying to find the maiden name of Matilde and where and when she married Thomas.  I would also like to find the name of Thomas's parents.

Can anyone help me.

Couldn't find a suitable marriage on the Suffolk Marriage Index 1813-1837, maybe they met and married in London somewhere.

Do you have correct y.o.b. for matilda ??
(she is Matilda on census - mistranscribed as matilde in 1851)
1841 census Thomas age 23
Matilda age 30

(ages of adults rounded down to nearest 5 years on this census)

1851 Thomas age 39 Matilda age 44

1861 widowed Matilda age 50

on all census her p.o.b. is given as mendham Suffolk
Genuki states : the northern part of Mendham is in the Earsham Hundred and is in Norfolk
the southern part of Mendham is in Hoxne Hundred and is in Suffolk

so from census we can  assume Matilda was born in the southern part

Hello Dave

There are 2 submitted entries on the familysearch.org site for a Thomas JACKSON:

  • Thomas Jackson born 21 Oct 1810, bpt 25 Dec 1812 parents John Jackson & Elizabeth White Jackson
  • Thomas Jackson bpt 24 Sep 1812 parents Thomas Jackson & Frances Martin Jackson

Unfortunately the entries do not state which parish church these events took place but using the free search engine on FindMyPast there are these corresponding entries:
  • John Jackson married 1803 Bury St Eds St Mary
  • Elizabeth White married 1803 BSE St Mary
  • Thomas Jackson married 1805 BSE ST Marys
  • Frances Martin married 1805 BSE St Marys
[/list]
Familysearch lists the children born to Thomas & Frances, BSE & they inc a Frances & a Mary Ann.  Your Thomas & Matilda went on to name 2 of their children Frances & Mary Ann, which might be an indication of who his parents were.

As for their marriage have you considered that as their first child William Thomas c1836 (1851C) was born in Maidenhead it is feasible that they may have met & married there?

Good luck
Keziah

Many thanks to everyone for your replies.  The information you have given is great and I will now be able to do some more research.  Yes I guess Thomas may have met and married Matilda somewhere other than Suffolk.  He had certainly left Suffolk by 1836 when William was born in Maidenhead and interestingly all the other children were born in Chelsea.

Once again. many thanks

Dave
