Marriage is indexed as Scofield  on freebmd

Do you have a copy of the marriage cert showing her fathers name and occupation

There is also this thread on another website about Ewing Groat which may be of interest

Apart from the 1861 census, what evidence do you have of where and when Annie was born? Did Ewings Groat have a maritime/naval connection? If so, perhaps Annie's father was similarly occupied and was based in Plymouth as she grew up, but that she was actually born elsewhere, and the family then moved to Portsmouth where she met Ewings. I can see no likely registration of her birth in Devon around the time you indicate. Have you found her in 1851?

The 1841 census shows only one SCHOFILD (sic) family living in Devon - Elizabeth 40 plus presumed children Joseph 13, William 9 and Septimus 2. By 1851 the family name is recorded as SCOFILL and only Elizabeth remains aged 52, living in Exeter. It is possible that the 1861 census enumerator made a mistake - it states that she came from Devon, Devonshire - is it possible she came from the City of Derby in Derbyshire where the surname is far more prevalent?
