Trying to trace whereabouts of Richard Alfred Pass in Bedford, anytime prior to his death in March 1942 (age 64yrs - bc1874 - a window cleaner)

Address where died 3 Kimbolton? Road, Bedford.
Death cert. says he was living at 31 Alexandra Road, Bedford.

He married my grandmother in Hartlepool 1916 and there is no trace of him after this date.  His residence at time of marriage was given as 8 Amphill Road, Bedford. 

Would appreciate any help/advice as to where I might start looking for him between 1916 and 1942.

He has old phone books & electoral registers and as you have addresses and dates that might well help

Following recent research..... a revised request on Richard Alfred Pass.

In 1919, he was living 27 Victoria Road, Bedford, with his wife, my paternal grandmother, Amelia May Readman.

By 1923, Amelia had left Richard and had returned to her birthplace, Middlesbrough.

My quest is to
A) discover Richard A. Pass's movements between 1919 & 1923
B) discover if there is any truth in the family story that he went into an asylum.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Have you looked for him on the 1939 register? He's not quite correctly listed on the Find My Past free index (middle initial incorrect) but the address is the same as his death

Yes, Mabel, I have him on the 1939 register.
It is between the years 1919 & 1923 I am particularly interested in and whether he actually was admitted to an asylum.

The Heritage Library in Bedford Central Library which opens on Tuesdays has a series of Bedford Street Directories from around 1900 up to 1939, plus a series of Kelly's directories for Bedford from 1947 up to 1975.  Can you remind us as to what name(s) you are looking for & possible addresses.

Death notice in Beds Times of 6 March 1942 has entry for Richard Alfred Pass death on 3rd March at 31 Alexandra Road, Bedford age 63 years.  By the way 3 Kimbolton Road is address of Bedford North Wing Hospital at that time. 

Bedfordshire Electoral Registers (as per Beds Archives) available at Ancestry, has him at 27 Victoria Road Bedford in 1918 & 1919 (with Amelia May Pass) and at 65 Harpur Street in 1933, 1934 & 1935, and then at 31 Alexandra Road in 1936, 1937, 1938 & 1939.

It's Richard Alfred Pass I am trying to trace after leaving 27 Victoria Road, Bedford, sometime shortly after 1919.

If he is not registered as living there in 1920 then where did he/they go?

As previously mentioned, if the story is true, he would have been admitted to an asylum sometime between 1920 & 1923.
I do have details of his whereabouts, in later years, including his death.

Maybe a search of the hospital records  you mentioned will throw something up.

Unfortunately, I have little else to go on and would understand if, without further detail, it would be too difficult to start searching.

I'm not sure how hospital admission/discharge records are recorded.

Hello, I went to the Bedford Heritage Library yesterday & looked through the street directories....

Sorry cannot find your man apart from what you already know.

In 1916, the year of his marriage, at 8 Ampthill Road is John Pruden.
Richard Alfred Pass was at 27 Victoria Road in 1918; in 1917 that address was vacant.
There were no directories for 1919, 1920, 1921
He was not listed in any directories from 1922 up to 1932
From 1933 to 1935 in appears at 65 Harpur Street, after that up to 1939 he is at 31 Alexandra Road.

If he was in a local asylum it might be the Three Counties Asylum / Fairfield Hospital at Stotfold - Bedford Archives might have admission/discharge records, suggest you contact them.

Asylum records are embargoed for 100 years (I think), so, even if the records exist, you may not be able to consult them.
