Can anyone help me my 2x great grand (Naturalist)
« on: Saturday 18 February 12 16:14 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me please, I found out today that my 2x Great Grand Father was described as a Naturalist in the 1880's.
His name Henry Parslow Born Kingston Surrey 1832. Living in Wandsworth.
I know he was a Police Officer/Detective Office between 05 Jan 1857 (Pensioned) 09 July 1881.
Would anyone know what a Naturalist would have done in Wandsworth in the 1880s.
I really do not understand the change in Occupation.
Thanking you in advance.
Caroline.

Hi Caroline,

My great uncle became one also after many years of working in an office.

Maybe it was a hobby at one time and then they became good enough at it to use it as a full time occupation. I have also found some of his work on-line and still for sale as antiques now,

Have you looked for any shop premises he might have used in that area?

A Naturalist was a recognised occupation, he collected, mounted, bought and sold live or mounted specimens of birds, insects, fish, animals, trees, flowers etc. He also often studied their lives and habitats.
