Finding information Pre 1837
« on: Saturday 18 February 12 07:11 GMT (UK) »
Hello.   I have researched my family history back to the early 1800 using BMD'S.   Foundation subscription to Ancestry and 1911 census subscription to Find My Past, and Family Search (Mormon's site).   I am now finding it increasingly difficult to find information before the early 1800's and hope some one can advise me which sites, subscriptions, other materials would help me.   My computing skills are very limited.   Thanks in anticipation.     Jeanette

Hi Jeanette,

The FamilySearch site is very useful (I know you already use it). Remember to check both the old site and the new site.

Also try FreeREG - sister project of FreeBMD and FreeCen - http://www.freereg.org.uk/. I've found it particularly useful, but you have to be lucky. For example, for some areas there will be no records but for others there will be a huge amount of material.

I'm sure some others will have more ideas.

Hello CV-S.   Thanks for the information.   I had never heard of freeREG or freeCEN   I will check them out right now.   Jeanette.
PS   Love the horse.

Hi Jeanette,

You could also try,

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

My advice is don't believe all you read, but it is a very helpful site  for initial information, but then - follow it up yourself to make sure you have accurate information.

Best wishes,

Local Family History societies can be very useful, as they often have extensive records of baptisms, marriages and burials from local churches going back much further than 1837.
Which towns/counties are you researching?

Hello Bykerlads.   Thankyou for answering my post.   In answer to your question, my main areas of search are in Staffordshire,  Cheshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire.   As I live in Scotland I have to do most research from a distance.   Thanks again, I will try to follow up your advice.     Jeanette
