John Bryant
« on: Friday 17 February 12 20:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi,  was hoping someone might know about John Bryant born 1827 and baptised at St George the Martyr 25 Decmber 1831.The last record I have for his is on the 1851 census where he is living with his Mother Ann at 6 King st Bermondsey. He is listed as Tanner and unmarried.
Any help with what happened to him after this date would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Turinb, you say he was baptised at St George the Martyr, where exactly is that?  From your post I'm assuming London, but was it Southwark, Bermondsey or which parish?
Do you have any knowledge of him in later life?  By that I mean do you know something from his descendants and are trying to fill in gaps, or is it that he is at a total dead end in 1851?

Karenlee, I was typing "Ignore the question about where he was baptised, I've found them on the 1851 census you mentioned, all Bermondsey" when our posts crossed..   Big family and obviously leather work / tanning was a family occupation, especially as the district they were in is called the Leather Market.   The family next door, headed up by Joseph Bryant age 32, also a tanner.   Is that John's elder brother?

p.s. Oops, Karenlee apologies - too late at night.   Hadn't picked up the reply was from you!

Bit of a long shot, but there is a John Bryant in Newington age 64, born Southwark c. 1827, in the 1891 census.    He is an Iron Founder.
I realise it probably isn't yours but if yours is a total dead end would it be worth tracing this chap backward to see if there's any connection? (that's if you haven't looked at him already)

Working back, I've found the same John in the 1861 census.  He's an Iron Moulder age 34 born in Southwark, so the right age and place of birth but wrong occupation, though there has been a 10 year gap for him to change about.
Wife's name is Marianne, and the first child Alice is 7, so that would put a marriage at some point between 1851 and probably 1854.
She's from Newark in Nottingham so whether your John or not, they may not have married in London.
They are in Newington - ref is Class: RG9; Piece: 338; Folio: 11; Page: 23; GSU roll: 542617.

Aah well, you know what is paved with good intentions....

John Bryant and Marianne Whillock married at St George, Southwark in 1852.  Only problem is his father was John Bryant, Carrier.

Wrong John Bryant.   Sorry

There is a death listed on 09 February 1863.  John Bryant, age either 33 or 35, hard to read.  That's the parish record says because I'm afraid it was in the workhouse, and the parish to be charged is St George, Southwark.
Saint George's Workhouse, Mint Street: Register of deaths; Call Number: SOBG/035/2.

Slightly more cheerful is a John Bryant's burial in 1885.  He was age 58 so that fits but no further details apart from his address, 11 Lower Orchard Street, Clapham.  He was buried in Norwood Cemetery Lambeth on 2 May 1885, so if you haven't ruled him out would it be worth looking at him on the 1881 census to see if he could fit your John?
