Matthew Jackson
« on: Friday 17 February 12 16:03 GMT (UK) »
My 2x grand father Matthew Jackson born Belper 1792 died Oldham June 1864 aged 72, married Elizabeth Kenyon in the parish of Duffield 2 April 1820.
Marriage witnessed by John and Joel Jackson, can anyone help me to determine what relationship the witnesses were to Matthew and if possible Matthew's parents.
Living in Canada makes it difficult for research in Derbyshire, any information will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
Roy.

I was hoping to find a baptism for Matthew (and a John) at the same place with same parents...unfortunately I didn't ::)

My guess would be that John and Joel are his brothers. with perhaps John being first born son to parents John and Mary.... but there is not enough evidence to prove or disprove this.
Alternatively, John could be the father.

And sadly the nearest baptism I can see is Matthew Jackson
19 May 1793   BOLSOVER,DERBY,ENGLAND
Parents Richard Jackson and Ann

or
18 May 1808   BOLSOVER,DERBY,ENGLAND
Parents Peter Jackson and Sarah

Bolsover is currently about 15 miles from Belper so it may not be the right one

Milly,
I also saw the baptism for Matthew at Bolsover from the IGI records, my cousin and i had come to the conclusion that John and Joel Jackson were brothers of Matthew but more evidence is needed. One trait they all had was the occupation of miner, until a son of Matthew died at 17 possibly through contracting dropsy in his occupation of miner in Oldham. The rest of the male line then switched to being rope makers a safer occupation than mining.
Best regards,
Roy.
