The ROSHER family in Victoria. COMPLETED, MANY THANKS TO ALL

I am trying to find details of when the Rosher family emigrated to Australia from England.

The family were Henry and Martha Alice Rosher who married in Leeds 1901. Both Henry and Martha were born in Leeds, Henry in 1877 and Martha Alice in 1883.

I know they were still living in Leeds in 1907 as in the 4th quarter of that year they registered the birth of a daughter called Annie. I have a record of this Annie being buried in 1909 at Footscray cemetery, Victoria (source Find my Past). This would put the time of them emigrating as between late 1907 and 1909.

They would also have  their son, Albert (bn 1903, Leeds) with them when they emigrated. There are no records in the Find my Past shipping section.

Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.

Hi Bob, Have you checked Victorian BDM for their deaths? Also how do you know that this Annie at Footscray is their daughter, do you have her DC?

Victorian DC's are very informative, but to check to ensure the correct one's you would need the parent names of both Henry and Martha.

Do you know these please?

A colleague of mine in Australia found all the family deaths in the Victoria death index also some births of children born in Australia. From what I can see Rosher is a very unusual name in Australia. I also have the family on electoral lists for 1914, 1919, 1943 and 1954.

Henry Rosher was the son of George and Hannah Rosher.
Martha Alice was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Berry.

Hi Bob,
  This doesn't answer your question, but did you know that Harry Rosher fought in WW1 in the 23rd battalion and was taken a prisoner of war in Germany.  His military record of 30 pages is digitised and available to view.

It even includes a poignant letter to his sister while he was a POW in Germany asking her to send some tobacco, and a response from his wife on news of his release and arrival back in England.

You will see there also that William, Edward and Frank fought in WW2 but their records are not digitised - but you can request/order this.

I would suggest that their surname has been mistranscribed on the shipping indexes.  Annie's death certificate would note her time in Australia.  You can purchase online [$17.50]and immediately download from

Martha died in Mildura in 1946.

All the above with the exception of Peggy, were deceased by 1973.

There are only 10 ROSHER listings on whitepages, and the one in Vic is in the Mildura area.

The two little sisters, ANNIE and MAY IVY are at FOOTSCRAY Cemetery (as you say)

Burial Register records the name MAY IVY, though as Cando shows, the death index is slightly different

Annie Rosher aged 18 months . Burial 25/3/1909

May Ivy aged 2 months.Burial 5/2/1910.


The were both of Yarraville.

The girls are in Common graves of different denominations. (Further details if you want)
