Hi Andrea,
I've also got another marriage between James Hobden and Mary Gent in June 1845 in Brighton. He had three children by his first wife who maybe Mary Starley, one of whom is my 3rd great grandfather - Henry born 1832 and baptised in Keymer. I've tried looking for a Mary Hobden who died before 1845 or 1851 as I presume his first wife died. The one you found in 1843 you found may fit?

The 1845 marriage will give his father as well.  A busy chap!   No doubt needing care for his children.   That means Mary Gent is the one born in Ditchling so the first Mary is still a mystery birthplace wise.
1843 death is looking good.  You could always ask the local office in Brighton for it and specify that you only want it if she is wife of James.  They are usually quite helpful about that sort of thing.
Are you a member of the Sussex Family History Group?  They have lots of online records if you are.

Hi Andrea,
Thanks for your help. I'll join the Sussex Family History Group.
The men did marry quickly after a woman's death for sure! I have found quite a few who married sisters.

Thanks for the help I have been given so far. It seems I have been following the wrong trail! I got the marriage certificate of Henry Hobden and Ellen Stapleton (May 16 1854, St Nicholas Parish, Brighton). Henry's father was not James as I thought but Jonathan Hobden. I've searched the census for 1841 and 1851 which show the right people at the right address but differing ages. He was married to Sarah and so far I have found two daughters, Christiana and Kate and a son Henry. Could any one find Jonathan's baptism (Southease) and marriage records  please?
Many thanks,
Mandy

In 1841 ages above 15 were usually rounded down to the nearest 5 so that might explain the difference.

Thanks Omega,
I found the marriage. I then lose the trail completely! I have a Henry Hobden born in Keymer in 1832 and had thought this was my HH, but the parents there are James and Mary. I can't find the 'new' Henry apart from the 1841 census and then again once he is married. I think two henry Hobden's have been confused if that makes sense?
Many thanks again,
Mandy
