Parish Register abbreviation
« on: Wednesday 15 February 12 18:07 GMT (UK) »
Perhaps someone can answer a question that was asked of me earlier today.  What is the meaning of a capital 'H' at the end of a baptism entry?  Also and possibly related HB and HC?

Thanks

Jim

Might it be for Home - as in Home baptism or christening? Or half baptism (if a child is likely to die)?

What time period are we looking at?

The baptism service consists of two parts, the baptism itself and the public receiving of the infant before the congregation at a service in the church as a member of Christ’s flock. If a child is baptised privately, they ought to be brought to the Church as soon as possible to be received as members of " the flock of true Christian people". This is why the term "half baptised" is sometimes used, because the second part has not been carried out. However children that are baptized privately, are not half baptized, as it is commonly called, but truly and validly baptized. (A general notice to the people of Southea with Murrow in Cambridgeshire published in the Wisbech Deanery Magazine Dec 1890.) "P" is usually entered for a private baptism.

Could the note refer to a place name?

For example, before 1813 the register for a church in village X may not show any address for families who live in X, but if they come from a nearby place Y (which perhaps does not have its own church), the register will show the name for Y after the names of the parents.  Usually this is written in full, but perhaps not in the register you refer to.  Or is it a transcription, rather than the original register?
