Thanks, MancsMan, would that be where St. Michael`s Square used to be?                                  Have you a copy of " Sunrise to Sunset" by Mary Bertenshaw who described her life there when her parents ran lodging houses in about 1907 onwards?
Crown Lane was close by.
I think Arkwright had a mill on ground behind this site hence "Factory St. "The Time Team did some digging there quite a few years ago-- if it is the same site.Found the big reservoir etc.
Do you know what they are looking for? There were many little courts etc  with true back to back houses and a ropery. This was  on the 1831 map.If I  have remembered correctly the mill which was Arkwright`s was by this date Norris and  Hodgiss`mill.I wonder if this was the one attacked by rioters in 1779.
All very interesting and thankyou again. Viktoria.

It is down by the Ragged School, they have uncovered a row of very old terrace housing cellars. A few yards passed the cemetery

Thanks MancsMan, some years ago( about 15) we took a party of schoolchildren down there and had a look around and did some old style lessons in the ragged school and played on St Michael`s flags.
We also went to John St which is just under the railway arch. You could still see the shapes where the back to back houses had stood and with the help of old maps we knew just how many there were. The front steps and cellar openings could still be clearly seen.
We had census returns and at one house in John St 19 people were listed. It was a cellar, one ground floor room and one bedroom. The 19 people were not related for the most part.
We had reat fun getting 19 kids into the area of the ground floor room but of course they probably would all not be at the house at the same time as some would be doing shift work.Sadly a little time later it was under asphalt and used as a car park which I thought was a great shame.
It seems ironic that now they are having to excavate such dwellings when there were some quite visible a relatively short time ago in almost virgin state. Mancester City Council !!!!!   Viktoria.
