Plenderleith
« on: Tuesday 14 February 12 21:53 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have any information regarding the Plenderleith family starting with David ? dob who married Helen Simson approx 1743.  They had a son Robert b 18.3.1759 bp 25.3.1759
Not sure who Robert Married but there is a son Alexander bp 17.2.1782 who married Ann Fairley at Liberton on 13.6.1800.

From this marriage I have traced the Plenderleiths to present day but the David and Robert bits are a bit guess work.

If anyone has these people in their tree I would appreciate any info.

Many thanks in anticipation

S

The David Plenderleith/leath/lieth who married Helen Simpson in 1743 was a Minister at Dalkeith.

A brief biography is given in Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae

You mention a marriage in Liberton ... did you see there is a baptism record for an Alexander Plenderleith to Robert Plenderleith and Margaret Marr in 1778 in Liberton also?

Hi

Thanks for your help

I have a copy of William Plenderleiths deth record which states
William son of Alexander Plenderleith and mother Ann Plenderleith nee Gairlie(Fairley)
Information supplied by Alexander

This was taken from Scotlands People.

There is also a baptism record on family search for Alexander - son of Robert on  17.1.1782 and a marriage reference of  his marriage to Ann on 13.6.1300

Do you have aprimary source for Robert's marriage to Margaret Marr - there is reference to them being the parents of several children on Family search, however, have you checked out Scotlands people to view the documents on line?

The date you have noted for Alexander differs to that of his bptism record - are these the same people.

I have Roberts parents as David and Helen Simson (married 6.9.1743) but there is also another marriage on a different date and different village betweek David and Hellen
?same couple
?why marry twice
?different villages/parishes
I wonder if he was a minister that is the reason why the service was performed twice?
?maybe enyoiyed it so much the decided to do it again a couple of weeks later

I am confident of all my information from William onwards, as this has been reseasrched through Scotlands people/sensus/bmd records etc etc
it is just the earlier bits I cant quite get my head round.

but still trying.........

thanks again

S

You are right to be wary of some inclusions in the LDS index ... however, if the batch numbers begin with either a 'C' (for christening) or an 'M' (for marriage) then the original record will be found on SP.

Doubtful there were two marriages, the dates likely refer to the marriage banns read in the parish of the groom (in David's case, Ormiston) and the ceremony in the parish of the bride (in Helen's case, Pencaitland).

I wondered how you 'knew' that 'your' Alexander was born in 1782?  The record on LDS shows a birth of someone of this name to father Robert in Peebles but the birth in 1778 of an Alexander to father Robert might also be worth investigating since it was in Liberton, the same place in which he was later to marry.

What were the professions of 'your' William and Alexander?

Hi

That's why I was posting for some help on the message board, because the Alexander in my tree bp 1782 is recorded as father Robert and there is another one as you say b 1778 to Robert and Margaret Marr.

Re the two weddings - I had settled on it being the banns and a wedding but always helpful to get someone elses thoughts on it.

re professions - william is recorded in 1841 as an agricultural labourer
in 1861 as an engineer
in 1871 recorded as a saw miller
his father alexander is recorded as a labourer (deceased) on William's death cert

My query is are these two different Alexander's as sometimes chidlren are named after an earlier sibling who died
Are there two Robert's one married to Margaret Marr and who was the other one married to
The locations of the two births - not too sure of the geography but I guess the marriage of Alexander to Ann at Liberton might be more of an indication that he was the son of Robert and Margaret Marr b 1778 in Liberton

Alexander is recorded living in Liberton in 1810 with Ann and his children so again, makes me think that perhaps my alexander was born 1778 and not 1782.
Having thought about it if A was born in 1782 he would have been 18 when he married ann the other A b 1778 would have been 22 which is more likely
so.............. I think that on balance there is more likelyhood that my Alexander was born 1778 and is the son of Robert and Margaret Marr, but I need to do some more searching to be sure and before I add to my tree.

thanks for your suggestions ~ I may have just solved my own query!!!!!

Do you by any chance have a birth date for David as the only one I can find with father Partick was born 1695 which would have made him 50 when he married  Helen and fathering his last child robert when he was 64 years of age.

thanks

Can't see a date of birth for David on Fasti or LDS but ...

David's father, Patrick b. 1679, d. 1715, his mother, Jean Rymour, d.1730
http://histfam.familysearch.org/getperson.php?personID=I12886&tree=Fasti#cite1

Here is David's info from Fasti, indexed on LDS:
http://histfam.familysearch.org/getperson.php?personID=I2769&tree=Fasti

Lots of Plenderleith/leath references on http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/

This info is brill
however
working through it
Patrick b 1679 married Jean Rymer in 1703
working on there is no dob for David or Benjamin but presuming they were born relatively  soon after the marriage say within a range of 5 years that gives a dob of approx 1703-1708
David married helen in 1743 which appears to be rather old at 35ish and him beginning to father children at 38 years, his last child being born when he was 51.

not impossible but ? likely
