Henry Webber, RN - Possible Hampshire Marriage
« on: Monday 13 February 12 21:40 GMT (UK) »
Good evening Fellow Chatters,

Henry Webber was born in Berkinhead in 1880 and served in the RN from June 1900 to June 1922.
He married in Edinburgh in 1919 and stated his status as widower.

I have found his service record detailing his career rise from Stoker to Chief Stoker whilst serving on numerous different ships. The 1901 census shows him serving on HMS Resolution in Gibralter, but I cannot find a 1911 record.

I have found in excess of 30 Henry Webber marriages in the relevant period but no obvious matches.

Henry was serving on HMS Revenge based at Portsmouth in 1906 when a marriage of a Henry Webber is recorded to either Ellen Jane Linnie or Jane Elizabeth Widgery. I have found 2 records of an Ellen Webber dying in Alverstoke in Q3/1907 or Q2/1911 in Newton Abbot. I have not found a recorded death of a Jane Webber in the relevant period.

The former Ellen Webber death at Alverstoke looks to be a distinct possible., but I am reluctant to add to my failed certificate collection without attempting to achieve a little more certainty.

I have hunted for Hampshire Parish Records but have been unsuccessful.

I would be grateful if any members could suggest any other line of approach which might assist in finding Henry's first wife.

Regards,

John Bennett

There are not many parish records online for that sort of date - it might have to be a certificate  :(

Where did Henry die?  Was it by any chance in Scotland?  Does it give the names of his wives on his death certificate?  It often does.

I would be inclined to discount Newton Abbott RD - no naval port within it and I would have expected his wife to stay close to the dockyard.  Alverstoke would make more sense, but you have to eliminate that before going further.

Have you checked Henry on the 1911 census index - look-ups for this census are not allowed here on RootsChat - and then viewed the image to find out if he is shown as married or widowed.  Not proof positive, but it may help you narrow things down.

I see from the Navy records that there are several Henry Webbers or Henry Webber in combination with a middle name, and all with birth dates around 1880-82 and a number of them were born in Devon!  So Webber deaths in Devon are more likely to be linked with Webbers of Devon origin - not 100%, but more likely.

Thank you folks for the various responses.

I know Henry's precise birthdate of 4th June, 1880.

I have access to 1911 census records, but have found neither Henry or his ship HMS Mercury for that date.

His 2nd marriage was in Edinburgh to Alexandrina Goodwin and he died there in March 1938, the death being registered by the said 2nd wife.

Is there some conclusive evidence that jane Elizabeth Widgery married Albert Edward, the BMD record quotes Henry Webber as a possible spouse also.

Regards,

John
