So, going back to the beginning - you have the birth certificate for Thomas born in Whissendine, presumably the 1846 Q3 listing right?

On this it shows parents as Ann formerly Broughton and William Stimpson - definitely with a p?

What is given as the father's occupation on the certificate?

What lead you to decide to purchase that particular birth certificate?
Rigg/Scholfield - Oldham/Rochdale
Hibbert/Moore - Hayfield/Saddleworth
Garstang/Kirby - Littleborough/Todmorden
Sutcliffe/Hill - Todmorden/Walsden
Young/Stevenson/Newbutt - Ticknall/Kegworth/Nutall/Hucknall/Bulwell
Woolley/Potter, Gaze/Parkins - Kegworth/Normanton-on-Soar/Wheathampstead/Harpenden
Smith/Green - Offley/Flamstead

i am also looking for a marriage between william stimson and ann broughton, my great grandfather was thomas stimson born whissendine 1848.
on thomas's marriage certificate his father is named as william stimson, farm labourer but on thomas's birth certificate the father is named as thomas, labourer.
does anyone know if both christian names refer to the same person?

As shown in my first reply - their first child was 6yrs old in 1841 so any marriage should be pre-1837 and you are therefore dependant on finding an entry in a parish record either in Rutland or Leics

my apologies carole, silly typing error, thomas stimson was born 1846, i have copy of certificate and father is named as thomas on it but named as william on marriage certificate so is it possible that they are two different people?

Re: the marriage cert you have for Thomas b 1846 - father shown as William.  Was William a Baker by occupation

If so - then that matches the 1841 and 1851 census details I posted on page 1.  However - that William didn't have a son called Thomas in 1851

On Thomas's marriage certificate his father is William Stimson, Farm Labourer.
I have always thought the 1851 census you mention may be the wrong family as William's occupation differs and there is no sign of a Thomas.
But on the other hand, the parents names and area do match up, very confusing.
