Quick question - what does R.I.E. stand for?
« on: Sunday 12 February 12 20:55 GMT (UK) »
Good evening - can anyone help with what I'm hoping is just a quick little niggle.

I'm typing up some family notes and can't work out this acronym:

"In 1941 he was again on active service in various places. After partition in 1947 he left India as a brigadier with the G.I.E."

Can anyone help?

Many thanks

Was it R.I.E? [you say G.I.E in your post text?].  R.I.E.......my thought would be Royal Indian Engineers? Part of the British army.

Thank you everyone!

It's definitely a G and I'm told that this relative ::) *NEVER* made any mistakes!

Royal Indian Engineers sounds very persuasive though...  :)

No idea on the 'G'.......the royal bit is George V so perhaps the 'G' is a reference to his division of the R.I.E.  Clutching at straws on that one maybe.
