Accidental death.
« on: Saturday 14 May 05 12:14 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have just received death certificate for one of my family.  James Peter Mclaren aged 9 died of head injury at a timber yard.

An inquest was held on  October 1879.  Would I be able to get the coroners report. Or any more info.

Died in Kirkdale, Liverpool

Thanks

Sue

Had a relative drowned and there was a coroners inquest. There was a report of the inquest in a local newspaper, so maybe you should have a try with the Liverpool papers.

Hi Sue

Try

Liverpool Coroners Office,
The Cotton Exchange

Tel: 0151 233 4707

or

Liverpool Record Office,
Central Library,
William Brown Street,

email: recoffice.central.library@liverpool.gov.uk

website: archive.liverpool.gov.uk/leaflets/coronersrecords

The Record office charges £10 for half an hours research.
They were able to find me a newspaper article I wanted.

My GGF died falling under a train at Euston station in 1911. The records office advised that all they would retain was the same basic info which appeared on the death certificate and not the full inquest details.

Hi Sue, :)

I applied to Tameside Library on two separate occasions for inquest reports. ( 1882 & 1901 )

The staff were most helpful and I received full reports from the local newspaper at no charge.

As you have the date of the inquest I would try Liverpool Library first. The newspaper reports are comprehensive. I even know what the last meal was.

Cheers Darcy

Thanks for all your replies.

I will try the Liverpool Record Office.  The staff are quite helpful there.  Take a look at newspapers for that time.

Cheers

Sue

I have found this thread very interesting and will look further into why my Great Grand father died - "Syncope" at the local gas works! apparently fainting!! or today I guess it would be gassed.

I have newspaper reports from my g grandfathers inquest.

You can find out many details from these reports and it adds such a lot of info to a death certificate. Or at least it did in my case.

Good luck with your search
Best wishes

Thanks Pauline

Will be going the library this week.  Got quite a shock when I got the certificate, was expecting some childhood disease.  He accidentally fell off a pile of timber and a plank fell on top of him. Killed on the spot.   :'(

I am wondering what he was doing at a timber yard, working or playing.  Well hopefully will find more info soon.

Thanks everyone

Sue
