« on: Saturday 11 February 12 12:56 GMT (UK) »
To my delight I have just found William Garnham Turrall, sometime spelt Turrell, he is shown on all census up till 1891 when he had retired , he is shown as "chief superintendant of police", on all census he lived around Maidstone between census then Cambridge and Suffolk, any idea where I can get his police records from please

Any help much appreciated

Did you find any thing. William Garnham Turrall is my 3rd great grandfather and I have a some of his police records. In fact I've got his truncheon. Is he any relation to yourself?

regards

Keith

Hi, I have researched Cambridgeshire Constabulary for many years now. I can say that there is no personnel record for William Garnham Turrall. From my research he joined Cambridge Borough Police 02/12/1858 as Superintendent (classed as Head Constable from Feb 1859), he retired on pension sometime around 24/02/1889. Prior to joining Cambridge Borough he was superintendent of police at Colchester. (colchester was a smaller force) and prior to this on 1851 census he was a police inspector at Rugeley in Staffordshire. I have his death as 29/12/1891. His son Walter Garnham Turrall also joined Cambridge Borough police as an Inspector (clerk) on 29/06/1871 he was promoted Chief Inspector in 1885 and retired on pension on 28/11/1901
Cambridgeshire Constabulary 1836-1965.

Hi

Thanks for that. He was also in the Kent Police as a 1st Superintendent of Police [Joined force 7th Feb 1857 left 24 October 1857] based at Maidstone. This was confirmed by their archives. He must have been in Colchester between 1857 and 1861. Do you have any details of his time in Colchester.

Keith

Hello Keith, I have nothing on Williams other service, I was pleased to read that you had some paperwork on him and his truncheon. So much has been destroyed within the police it took me ages to find out what I have. The newspaper archives are a great source for information, they will be even better when more newspapers are online.
