Hi Bettyanne and Cliver
My great grandfather, John Hall, was born in 1859 in Quebec. His birth certificate states he is son of John Hall, drum major in the 39th, and Ellen nee Hare. Sponsors are are Thomas and Mary Jane Wright plus Corporal Thomas Joseph Brown also from the 39th.
I also have a copy birth certificate of his father, John Hall born in 1827, also in Quebec. His parents were John Hall, Messenger to the Royal Engineer Office, and Elizabeth (no maiden name given).
I have confirmed that my great grandfather’s regimental number was 1861 and have been told by my mother that he attended the Royal Hibernian Military School in Dublin and had two brothers and one sister. I am guessing from previous posts that these are James, William and Annie. My mother’s notes also state that Elizabeth dies in Oxford aged 94.
I plan to visit the National Archives in London and wonder whether you have any further information which may help me in my research there.
I am happy to share anything further I discover.

I found your information very interesting.  Unfortunately I do not have much more to add,  I started researching my family a couple of years ago but for various reasons had to stop and have not yet been able to get back to it.  I received an interesting thread about women convicts to Australia and a reply stated that a Ellen Hare  was transported to Australia for 7 years from Ireland for stealing a handkerchief, she was sent on a ship called the Whitby You may well have this thread too.  It also stated she was given permission to marry a James Mill, so the dates and husband do not fit, but maybe some connection somewhere.

Hi Bettyanne, thank you for your prompt reply. I am sorry that you are currently unable to continue with your research. I have visited the National Archives and have a little more information. I found confirmation that my great grandfather had attended the Hibernian Military School in Dublin. He joined aged 10, in 1869. The school was for children of military personnel either orphaned or with parents serving overseas. I could not find service records for his father, John Hall, born in Quebec in 1827 so started looking at muster records and payrolls. I confirmed that he was a sergeant and member of the band with the 39th foot in 1851, stationed in Newry, Ireland. Also in Bermuda in 1861 where he was promoted from sergeant to drum major on the 12/11/1861. Unfortunately I ran out of time but intend to return to check further payrolls to establish his movements with the 39th. I will update you regarding anything I can confirm.
