Hi Craig

Death and burial registers pre 1855 are said to be the worst maintained records unfortuntately. There looks to be five entries showing in Leith (North & South) on Scotlands People between 1832-41 for a James Thomson. I don't know the style of the registers from Leith to know what sort of info may be contained and whether there might be enough detail for you to try and identify the correct James. Also possible that his details may not be there.

Not sure if you have any addresses that could help. Have you tried looking at any of the directories of the period here www.nls.uk/family-history/directories/post-office/index.cfm?place=Edinburgh
