Robinspierre's in France
« on: Saturday 11 February 12 00:26 GMT (UK) »
Descendants emigrated to NZ & changed their name to Robinson. In NZ can go back as far as a Joseph William 'Robinson' born around 1827 supposedly in France? Has anyone any bright ideas here please? Jesszgran

"Robinspierre" I don't think would be the original spelling.  "Robespierre", perhaps? (Like Maximilian).
What records say that Joseph was born in France?

What is:
1. the earliest record for him in NZ
2. the date and place of his marriage
3. the date and place of his death

Hi! I had wondered about 'Robespierre' as had no luck with 'Robinspierre'! Am doing this area for my adult son whom we adopted at birth. He has had contact with his natural mother, & it was through her we discovered this french connection - on HER mother's side. As far back as she knows - after their name was anglicised to Robinson - her earliest ancestor was 'big' in the Wanganui Fire Brigade here in NZ. Through our historical BDM records & 'Papers Past' I have been able to get back to this Joseph William Robinson. His obituary in Papers Past validates (a) his connection with the Fire Brigade in Wanganui (where he was still living) & (b) his son (Sydney) from whom my son has descended! Said J W Robinson died - aged 57 - in 1884...which puts his birth around 1827. His wife was a Julia Ann (c. 1843 - 1886) I have discovered a later son of theirs who has 'Anson' as his middle name - which may (or may not!) be relevant!! There are no marriage records for them here...so am 'sorta stuck' at this stage! (According to Papers Past too, said JWR had lived in Wanganui for 19 years prior to his death...but he had lived in Dunedin previously...??for how long! Sadly I haven't been able to find any record of him arriving in NZ though, from any passenger list names!) So any other bright ideas please?

There's a marriage in 1861 (for him?) on the NZ historical bmd to Isabella Mouait Thomson.

http://www.archives.presbyterian.org.nz/marriageregisters/knoxdunedin31.htm
Here she is Isabella Mowat Thomson.

Papers past do have a 1863 notice about the funeral of Mrs Robinson, wife of Foreman Robinson: members of the fire brigade in Dunedin were asked to attend.
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=ODT18631113.2.17.1&cl=CL1.ODT&e=-------10--1----0--

So presumably the marriage to Julia took place between 1863 and whenever the first child was born.

Do you have:
Information from the death certificates of Joseph and Julia
Information from the birth certificate of one of the children
(http://genealogypro.com/articles/New-Zealand-records.html from here, from 1875 this should show birthplaces of parents and when/where married, so the birth of their last-born, Henry Cook Robinson, would be a good bet).
