Bambrough Family
« on: Friday 10 February 12 23:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am interested in learning more about the Bambrough family and would appreciate any leds or ideas of where I may look.  The following is what I have so far (some of which still needs to be confirmed).

John Bambrough c1788 Whickham, Durham
married Dorothy Storey in 1817.

Their son was William Bambrough c1820 Jarrow, Tyne and Wear
married Elizabeth Beylass

They had at least 6 children that I know of.  One of whom was
William Bambrough born 1851 In Tyne and Wear
He married Ann Swallow in 1873.

William and Ann had the following children.
Dorothy c1874
Margaret 1876-1896
Lawson 1879
Isabella 1882
Mary Jane 1885
James 1887-1918
William 1892.

James Bambrough born in 1887 and died 22 January 1918 in Durham was my great-grandfather of whom I know virtually nothing about.  Most of what I do know has been passed down through distant relatives so the information is a bit sketchy!

I do know that he married Margaret Beatrice Newman in 1908 and that they had 2 sons William and James before James Senior died (rumored to have been from gangrene due to an injury to his leg) in 1918.  I have no idea if he served during World War One though it is possible that he may of.

His widow Margaret remarried to a Robert Leckenby and had 2 more sons before she died in 1931.

Many of the family seem to have died young hence the lack of information that has been passed down.  Any help/suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

I could not find James Bambrough on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission web site. Also remember that Jarrow is in County Durham at the time of his life. If someone was born in Jarrow, County Durham 1910 and died in the same house as he/she was born in 80 years later that person would die in Jarrow, Tyne and Wear.

Hello Fred21,
Wow James is also my great grandfather too!
I only knew our ancestors as far back as his father William, so your post has helped me, and so I'm not sure I can be of much help to you. There is a NZ site called pye net which has the Bambroughs & Wildermoths trees back as far as great great grandfather William.

I think my grandfather William Ernest Bambrough or great grandfather James was a coal miner (haven't got certificate out to check)? My father also said one of our close ancestors was a marine engineer [in the war?]

There is a story that we are descended from a "German or Prussian prince" (which story i have had confirmed from 2 other more distant relatives form newcastle and south africa who i met online) which from my research seems to rather mean Anglo-Saxon prince possibly Ealdred of Bamburgh.

I would love to have contact and know any more with any relatives like you if any one wants. Being still stuck in NZ there hasn't been any much Bambrough family contacts/info since my grandfather came to NZ from Durham so isn't much family here.
Any info I have I amgald to share but I don't have much and is only the last few generations.

Sean.

The closest baptism in Whickham of a John Bambrough I could find was 20 Aug 1786 s/o John and Isabel of Fellside.

There is also a sister Isabel baptised 16 Feb 1783 also born Fellside and a Margaret baptised 20 Feb 1785 born Fellside.

Children of John and Dorothy baptised Jarrow St. Paul:

Thomas baptised 2 Feb 1823
William baptised 21 Dec 1820
Elizabeth baptised 15 Oct 1818

I am thinking these children are to John Bamborough and Dorothy Storey. They married in 1817 in Heworth  right?    The son William (b. 1820) is the one that married Elizabeth Beylass.

I only found the 3 in Jarrow, none in Heworth.  I can look other parishes that are close.  I did look in Lamesley, Ryton, and Gateshead Fell because I know folks moved around to these locations and you will find baptisms in all those parishes where the child was born in the other the other might be to look in Newcastle.  All Saints in particular.  I have no idea why but there were quite a few baptisms there where the family was from the Jarrow/Heworth/Gateshead areas.  It is quite the uphill trek from Quayside.

The sibling Isabella Bamborough (b 1783) I believe married one month later in Heworth to a William Gray.  Also marrying 8 Feb 1817 with John and Dorothy was Matthew Bamborough to Isabella Cowell.
