COMPLETED THANKS: Royal Pioneer Corps - Herbert PATTINSON
« on: Friday 10 February 12 18:37 GMT (UK) »
Good evening,

I'm trying to find out further information about:

Corporal Herbert PATTINSON born Guisborough or Middlesbrough, Yorkshire who served in the Royal Pioneer Corps and was a casualty on 17th June 1940 "at sea". His army number was: 4381206

If anyone can help, or has access to RPC archives or ressources I would be very grateful. Many thanks.

Nick

Hi Nick

I'm waiting for a service record myself they are taking at least 9 months at the moment. I've been waiting 6 months so far.

The Pioneers were part of the great reorganisation into the Royal Logistics Corps. Perhaps the RLC museum can help you, but they are here:
http://www.rlcmuseum.co.uk/

Looking at the CWGC website, he's likely to have been one of the many to have been killed in the sinking of the Lancastria. I note he had earned the MM, so he was quite a soldier - the RLC will know about him, I'm sure

Good evening Graham,

I have found trace of Herbert PATTINSON in the Escoublac-La-Baule War Cemetery in Loire Atlantique, France, which could very well correspond with the St. Nazaire sinking of the Lancastria.

Could you tell me where you found the note concerning the Miltary Medal please ? I have searched various records and am not sure I have the right one.

Many thanks,

Nick

Hi Nick,

Have you seen this topic:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,38351.msg150090.html#msg150090

The first post gives this link:

http://www.royalpioneercorps.co.uk/rpc/history_lancastria.htm

Cpl. H Pattinson, M.M. appears in the list of 'residents' of the British War Cemetery, Escoublac - La Baule, Brittany on that site.

Hope this helps,

Nick, if you haven't looked up the MM yet, this will give you an idea. Definitely not handed out with the packed lunches!
