Help Finding A Source Reference
« on: Wednesday 08 February 12 14:03 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

I was wondering if someone could help?

I am trying to find out where the source for the following information is likely to be located.  The source below is from the book 'An Historical Account of Diocese of Down and Conner' Pages 248 & 249

The territory out of which Charles II constituted the manor of Hillsborough and Growle had been the patrimony of a branch of the Magennisses family, named MacRory, which had fought in defence of Charles I.  The relationship which existed between MacRory, or Magennis of Kilwarlin, and Magennis, Lord of Iveagh, is shown by Dr Reeves, Eccl.Hist., p389.

"Art, surnamed na madhman, or of the overthrows who flourished A.D.1380, had two sons, Aodh and Cathbar; from the former of whom the Lords of Iveagh were descended, while the Kilwarlin brach derived its origin from the latter.  In 1575 Ever MacRory of Kilwarlyn made a surrender of this tract to Queen Elizabeth and took out a patent for the name, which original document is in possession of Goerge Stephenson, Esq., of Lisburn, whose maternal ancestors were of this race."

Reference the above;

Where would "the original document in the possession of George Stephenson Esq" be located?

Where can I find the book "Dr Reeves, Eccl.Hist., p389."?

The reason for this, is that I am trying to expand George's mothers side of the family tree so that I can link the Stephensons to the Magennis of Iveagh.

Many thanks, regards

Searching Google and linking to the National Library Dublin Catalogue brings up this reference on the papers of Dr William Reeves Archbishop of Down and Connor.
May give some clues

The full text of the Reeves book 'Ecclesiastical antiquities of Down, Connor, and Dromore' is at www.archive.org.

Your second query - now this could be totally wrong - but wonder if it means he was granted a letters patent by Elizabeth I. I think the way this works is that there should be a copy in the UK National Archives on the patent rolls and a summary in the relevant published Calendar. But like I said, this could be totally wrong!!
