Hi,

Brief mention of Mr Phillips the agent to Lloyds September 1841.

Maybe he was sent out by Lloyds of London as one of their agents and was located in Port Adelaide!

I am sure you are right Gerry as Cando had found me this info the other day. So I guess that means maybe he came over as a worker.

1841 was a tough year economically for South Australia many persons had been brought out from England for free with the Emigration Scheme were unemployed and supported by the Colony and for your Samuel to have been a shipping agent since 1839 in Port Adelaide may indicate that he wasn't an unskilled worker. 

Maybe he was one of the lucky Preliminary Land Order holders or maybe he was sent out by Llloyds or he was part of the emigrant scheme only further reseach may tell.  He was one of the real South Australia pioneers, Colonel Light had only finshed surveying Adelaide two years earlier in 1837.

PHILLIPS Samuel (Livesley?) arrived 1839-06-23 on Ganges from London
according to South Australian Passenger Lists. I found 7 Samuel Phillips in the convicts lists but none of the dates corresponded with his arrival. Now I tend to think maybe he wasn't a convict, but am probably totally wrong too.
