Can you help find the Bowman Family Huddersfield U.K
« on: Wednesday 08 February 12 04:21 GMT (UK) »
Can you help?

In the year of 1945

My Grandfather Walter Smith from Western Australia was a prisoner of war in the German camps. He escaped the Nazi's on the 'Great March' with a gentleman named Maurice Middleton. (I have exhausted all avenues for locating this U.K soldier...any suggestions would be greatly welcomed) Walter was repatriated to Australia via the United Kingdom. My Grandfather visited with close family friends. A gentleman noted in the memoir named Arthur Bowman died on the Peel Estate in Western Australia in 1930, it is Arthurs relatives that my Grandfather stayed with in Huddersfield. It is here that I would like advice on how to place an article or notice on the Nostalgia page (have tried the local Huddersfield Examiner with no luck).

Walter stayed for ten days with Mr and Mrs Bowman. They had a daughter named Ethal who had married a gentleman named Harry ( I have no surname for Harry) here he spent 10 days travelling around the U.K with Ethal and Harry, Granddad makes special mention that time spent here was integral to him in dealing with his life as a PoW for years.

I am looking for the Bowman family and in particular relatives of Ethal and Harry ( I know they may have passed away). It is the greatest hope of mine that somewhere in Huddersfield are pictures of my Grandfather with this family.............

Thank you

Hi

I've looked on freebmd and it looks like Ethel Bowman married Harry Hollingworth in 1924. They had seven children between 1925 and 1941.  I can send you their names and years of birth in a Personal message. I've found possible marriages for at least two of them so it's probably there are descendants still in Huddersfield.

Maybe you will have more luck with the Huddersfield Examiner with the name Hollingworth?

Sandra

SaiKung - your piece requesting information about the Bowman family is in the Huddersfield Examiner tonight so hopefully you'll get a response from that!

Hi. I don't know if you still use this. I've been looking for members of my family from the past and this came up. I'm from Huddersfield and I am a Bowman, there's loads of us! Haha. My mum says my grandad Leonard had an Aunty Ethel and I wonder if that's the same Ethel you have spoken about. (He fought in WW2). I would love to hear from you so we could look into this further. Thank you.
