Parents of Humphrey
« on: Tuesday 07 February 12 14:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I have details of Humphrey Wallis born Lincoln about  1796, died 1856. He married Elizabeth Glenn in 1819.
Any help finding Humphrey's parents?
Bob.

1851 census appears to say aged 53 born North Thoresby ... so possibly 1797 ...

see this (right hand page) http://www.lincstothepast.com/Records/RecordDisplayTranscript.aspx?oid=885503&iid=369759

I'm not sure what to make of it ???

If you haven't seen the 1819 marriage register, it's here http://www.lincstothepast.com/Marriages/604096.record?ImageId=219706&pt=T

Hi, Geoff-E
Better than I hoped for. Humphrey's son (having been in the Workhouse in 1841) is on the 1851 census as Ag lab
in the household of Ann Aystrope.     ? related to his g/mother ?
Many thanks for your help.
Regards Bob.

You will notice in 1851 with Ann AISTROPE, James and Emilia PEARSON ...

James PEARSON m Emelia WALLIS 17 May 1824 at Louth - note Emilia born at North Thoresby. :)

Amelia WALLIS bap 21 June 1803, dau of Humphrey and Elizabeth. :)

Humphrey WALLIS m Elizabeth AYSTROPE 16 May 1801 at North Thoresby.

Now, given that Humphrey AYSTROPE 1797 was bap with middle name WALLIS, I think we may have answered you original question dontcha think?  ;D

Hi,  Geoff-E,
Well spotted, but my Humphrey would have only been 6yrs old in 1803.
Once again my thanks.

As I said, Wallis was his middle name, he was christened as AYSTROPE.  Humphrey and Elizabeth didn't marry until 1801.  Emilia was very likely his sister. :)

Hi, Geoff-E
IF I have got this right, Humphrey born 1797, illegitimate son of Elizabeth Aystrope, was later legitimised when his father Humphrey married Eliz Aystrope in 1801. That seems to make sense. Why couldn't they call their children Fred or Harry or something other than Humphrey?
Regards
Bob.

You'll find old Humph's burial here http://www.lincstothepast.com/Burials/506427.record?ImageId=369118&pt=T

and, a few pages further on, an Elizabeth WALLIS (wid).  It looks like the age is wrong.  :-\

If you go back a few pages from the bap of young Humph, you may find the bap of an Elizabeth in 1781.  She would have been about 16 when young Humph was born and old Humph about 30 years older than her.  :o ... unless there was an intermediate generation of Humphs.
