LEAK family mystery
« on: Sunday 05 February 12 21:38 GMT (UK) »
Hello all

I've been researching my tree for a while now but have well and truly hit a dead end with my research (unless I travel up to Derby)

The furthest back I have managed with some solid info is George Leak b. 1759 and his brother John Leak b. 1754 in Eckington I think. George married Ann Staniforth in 1781 in Eckington.

There is a line that backdates a few hundred years and is a distant royal line that ends with Nicholas Leke, the Earl of Scarsdale. This is relatively easy to google so will leave out info for now.

I believe my line and this line somehow links and I have an 80 year gap in the research which I just cannot find for the life of me. Would anyone be able to help me solve this riddle once and for all?

Regards,
Sam

Looks like you need to start with Eckington PArish Records and surrounding parishes (at Derby Record Office?) and work back with your line step by step - normal Family History Research!

I see you are in Nottingham - so Derby is not so far away! Hope you are able to make the trip. There is nothing like hunting through Parish Records yourself and piecing it all together.
You may or may not link it to this 'royal' line - but will have the satisfaction of having traced YOUR line back a bit further.

Hi

If you haven't taken this further back, this maybe a small help...

Source, Eckington PR's:
22 Sep 1754 John s. of John Leak, bap.
21 Oct 1759 George s. of John Leake, bap. According to the PR's a George Leak did marry Ann Staniforth in 1781.

20 Mar 1757 William s. of John leake, bap.

These may also be of use at some point:
10 Nov 1753 Thomas s. of John Leak, bur.
1 Nov 1771 Anne Leak d. of John & Ann, bur.
5 Dec 1771 Robert Leak s. of John & Ann, bur.
26 Aug 1803 Anne Leak, wid, bur.
9 Oct 1787 George Leak, bur.
27 Feb 1777 John Leake, bur.

Geoff

I also live in Nottingham...........and you will find the Eckington Parish records at the Matlock Records office..which I frequently visit.............although the website mentioned above is excellent.

Derek.
Willing to research Derbyshire ancestors (free of charge) have a large number of derbyshire parish records. and access to many others including full Census including 1911....
