I do not have the birth certificate for John who as born in Barnsley, so cannot be more specific.
Unfortunately the births fall between the 1871 census in Batley and the 1881 census in Wigan
Are the records for St Mary of the Angels available to search online?
Just reread your email and you say that the records are available in Hinsley House, so I assume you are looking up the records in Leeds?
My John and Winifred Lavin both state in the census records that they are from County Mayo.
Are you aware of any of your Lavins moving over the hill into Lancashire?

Hi Sophie

I'll see if I can find your John's birth. I've had a look at the 1871 and 1881 census records for Ardsley but didn't find any Lavins so if there were family there it may have only been for a short time. I'll look at Barnsley later.

I'm not aware of any Lancashire connections but apart from Catherine Lavin's name and that she came from Mayo nothing else has passed down through the family. I'm originally from Batley and still have family living there but I've never come across anyone called Lavin which is surprising given the number who lived in Batley in the 1870s. However I've had real trouble finding the males in the census records and one explanation might be that they were moving round trying to find work.

There was one family of Lavins in nearby Birstall (now in the Borough of Batley) who hailed from Kilkelly in Mayo which is a village near Knock but so far I have been unable to establish a link with my Lavins.

Hinsley House is owned by Leeds Diocese and the original records for St Mary are held there unfortunately nothing is held in an electronic format though you can visit. I went and took details of all of the entries I could find for all the various surnames of my forebears including anything that looked like Lavin. I have a sort of spreadsheet that helped me piece things together and I'll try and attach a version with just the Lavins on that you might find interesting - bear with me though as it might not be until the weekend. Mine is also in English whereas the records are in Latin.

I would be interested to know what appears on the wedding certificate when you get it especially whether Patrick was still alive and what his profession was.

Regards,
Gellies

I have the marriage cerificate of John (age 20) and Winefred Larvan (age 19)
John was a Mason's Labourer, residence Batley, Father's name James Larvan. Joiner
Winefred, no occupation, residence Batley, Father's name Patrick Larvan, Farmer
Both fathers appear to be alive at the time of the marriage
Witnesses are: Catherine Lundy and Luke Larten (diificult to read - Perhaps Luke's name was Lawton)
If Lavin becomes Larvan, I can see Lawton becoming Larten!!
Perhaps the only ongoing clues are the father's occupations??
Or maybe a marriage between Cathering and Luke?

Hi Sophie

That's interesting as the ones that I've looked at: Catherine, James, John and Thomas all show their father as a farmer or farm labourer and still alive. I'll carry on searching.

I've only been able to find John and Thomas in the 1911 census and Thomas's birthplace is shown as Barhre Co Mayo and John's is Clonemore Co Mayo. Neither place appears to exist though there is a Cloonmore with a Ballagh Street so that could be a candidate. The problem is proving a link between them all.

I tried to attach a file with the Lavin marriage details that I have - first attempt but it didn't work. I'll have a go at converting it to another format bear with me.

In one of the census records John (1846) stated that he was born in Sligo, County Mayo
There is a Cloonmore in County Mayo
I cannot find a Barhre in County Mayo
Sligo and Cloonmore are not too far apart

Hi

Apologies but I've been very busy this week. I tried converting my spreadsheet into a pdf but that wasn't very successful and even worse it wouldn't then convert back. I recreated the spreadsheet, printed it and then took a photo but that has just failed as well. Probably best to send me a pm and I'll email it to you.

Regards,
Gellies
