Lavin Marriage - County Mayo
« on: Saturday 04 February 12 22:31 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for the marriage of my great grandparents
John LAVIN b 1846 married Winifred LAVIN b1848 in the late 1860s
By 1870, they were living in England, their eldest son James was born in Batley, they ecentually settled in Wigan.
There was always a family story about a Lavin marrying a Lavin.
From their children's birth certificates, this is true.
The name is sometimes down as LAVAN
I cannot find a marriage in England, so it is a possibility that they married in Ireland before moving to England.
According to later census records, they were both born in County Mayo.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to find the marriage record please?
Thanks

I can’t see any marriage listed between a John Lavin and Winifred Lavin in Co Mayo.
There is a marriage for a Winifred Lavin in Castlereagh, Mayo 1866 (Volume 9, page 76)  but her husband does not appear to have been named John Lavin.

There is also a marriage between a John Lavin and a Winifred Egan in Castlereagh 1867, Volume 4, page 270. That probably fits slightly better.

Thank you for the information, I agree that the dates fit, but I would be taking Winifred Egan as a convenient match.
John and Winifred had seven children, the first three were born in Yorkshire and I do not yet have their birth certificates.
The four younger children were born in Lancashire and the birth records definitely state the mother's maiden name as Lavin or Lavan.
I remember my grandmother saying of her parents that they were both Lavins - "a Lavin married a Lavin"
I will send for the birth certificate of the eldest child born and see what it says against the mother's name.
Thanks again

May I suggest you look at Ballaghderreen/Lisacul/Loughlyn areas of west Roscommon. I am aware of a number of Lavin families in these areas which fall within the Castlereagh registration district, parts of which were formerly part of Mayo prior to changes to the County border,

Hi

I've just seen this query and I might be able to help. I've been looking at the Larvins in Batley as well and I've looked at the records of St Mary of the Angels RC Church Batley now held at Hinsley House in Leeds. They show that on 11/01/1868 John Lavin son of James Lavin married Winefrid Lavin daughter of Patrick Lavin. A John and Winny Lavin and their son James also appear in the 1871 Census living in New Street in Batley.

There are a number of people with the Lavan, Lavin and Larvin surname in the Batley area and I'm not sure who is and isn't connected but my interest is in a Catherine Larvin from Co Mayo, daughter of a Patrick Larvin. She married John McManus in 1875. I would be interested in any information you might have if you think that there might be a link.

Thank you for this information, I had almost given up on finding this marriage.
I have John and Winny in the 1871 census, by 1881 they had moved to Wigan
Their children James 1870 and Thomas 1872 were born in Batley
John 1875 was born in Barnsley
Later children, including my grandmother Margaret Lavin 1875 were born in Wigan
Even though I now have the marriage date (with your help) in 1868, I still cannot see a marriage record in the usual BMD databases.
Perhaps they are hidden in another unusual variation of Lavin!!!
There are quite a few Lavins in the Wigan area, there is a Patrick Lavin, also marred to a Winifred, of a similar age to John Lavin, they have lived in the same streets in Wigan and I have always suspected that they were brothers, but cannot prove it.
Do you suspect that your Catherine Larvin and my Winifred Lavin have the same Patrick Lavin as theit father?
Did Catherine and John McManus stay in the Yorkshire area?

Thanks Heywood
I have tried so many variations on Lavin, but obviously not this one.
I will send for the certificate, hopefully, I can take them back a little further now

Hi Sophie

One piece of information you provided caught my eye straight away - Barnsley!

Catherine Larvin and John McManus married in Batley in 1875 and their first child, my great grandfather was born in 1876 at Glass House Fields, Ardsley an area of Barnsley. This was a surprise as we weren't aware of any Barnsley connection. They were probably back in Batley by 1881. I would be interested to hear where in Barnsley your John was born if you know.

From St Mary's baptism records (godparents etc) I'm fairly confident that Catherine had at least two brothers: Thomas and James. I've never managed to find James on a census and I've not found anything for Catherine before 1881. The only details of their origins is "Mayo" where I understand the Lavin name is common.

However I can't see the baptismal records for either James (1870) or Thomas (1872). I've also checked the records for St Paulinus at Dewsbury and again no luck.

From St Mary's marriage records there appear to be at least 3 Patrick Lavans who had children in Batley.

My Catherine's DoB was around 1856, Thomas around either 1844 or 1848 depending on which record you use and one of his witnesses was a Margaret Lavan, and James' around 1849. All state that their father was a farm labourer and alive. There might also be another brother John DoB 1852 though his father is described as a farmer.

A lot to take in - good luck.
