Sutton Valence look-up please 1824
« on: Saturday 04 February 12 17:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi helpful rootschat folk,
I wondered if anyone could look-up someone who seems to have been elusive to me. I would be so grateful.
I am trying to find someone called Thomas Tolhurst Smith, born circa 1824 in Sutton Valence, Kent. I am starting to wonder whether Thomas was a nickname. It is the name he uses on his marriage certificate (along with Tolhurst), but on a census record his entry is just Tolhurst Smith. If that is the case, then having a fairly common surname is negated by his christian name!
Anyway, my KFHS CD-Roms don't have entries for Sutton Valence going back that far and I'm kinda stumped. I think his father was Thomas, if that helps any.  In short, I can find records of his marriage, just not his birth, to progress.
Thanks in advance.
Marcus

Hi bearkat,
Thanks so much for that...!
That's confusing, eh?!  Perhaps he was told that name and got confused about what it was. Crikey!
Was this the record for Sutton Valence or a nearby parish (like Headcorn)? I assume that as you only had mother, there was no father registered? If you COULD look in Headcorn too, that would really help. You never know.
Thanks. Now I'm even more puzzled!!!

I found that Sutton Valence baptism on Familysearch.

Tollart could be a mistranscription of Tolhurst.  You will need to see the original parish records to see what you think it says.

It does look like he was illegitmate. Tolhurst may have been his father's surname.
