Mary Allen
« on: Saturday 04 February 12 16:26 GMT (UK) »
I hope someone can help please

I have a Mary Allen who married in Wales 1902. The marriage certificate gives her age as 23 and her father William Allen

The 1911 Census gives her place of birth as 'Derby Hill'  i cannot find this place but her grandaughter claims Mary was born in Derbyshire so if anyone knows of a Derby Hill i would be most grateful if you would advise me please

Many thanks

Lilly

Do yuo have a few more details eg who she married in 1902 and where more exactly?

I was wondering with the  welsh connection whether Derby was a mistranscription of Denby or Denbyshire - I have seen that quite a lot

Marriage, December 1902
Crickhowell district    vol 11b, page 231

Allen, Mary
Bowen, Daniel

I think that's the one!

But I can't find a Mary Allen in 1901 in either Monmouthshire or Breconshire?

The actual handwriting on the 1911 census says "Derby Harpur Hill"

So grateful for your replies. the marriage is the correct one for Mary and i have not been able to find her on the earlier census with the exception of 1881 where there is a Mary Allen who was born Harpurhill, Derbyshire. I did hope this was the Mary i am looking for but the age was different, so continued looking for Derby Hill

I didn't read the handwritten entry so will check that, it seems i did find the right Mary?

Again, thank you both

Lilly

From WIkipedia:

Harpur Hill is a small village on the outskirts of Buxton, Derbyshire. It has a primary school, a park, a pub, a working men's club and a Methodist Church, and contains parts of the University of Derby. It also has 3 football pitches which are homes to Harpur Club & Harpur Hill FC, A person that lives in this area is known as a Harpur Hillian, or Harpur Hill Billy. Buxton Rugby Union Club also have their HQ at Harpur Hill. They can be found on Sunnyfields Road. The tops of Buxton Rugby Club's goal posts are the highest in the country.

Mary Allen was really born 1877, according to 1881 (RG11, 3447, 97, 11)

Thank you again. There is no other Mary Allen born at Harpurhill at that time so must be my Mary. Perhaps her age 23 on the copy of the marriage certificate could either be an error and it should read 25 or she thought she was 23

I can't think how this cannot be the Mary i am seeking

Thank you so much
