Eastwood family - kent/sussex
« on: Saturday 04 February 12 14:54 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I'm trying to trace the forebears of John Eastwood - born 1816 Burwash in Sussex.  His wife was Harriet - I believe surname Jennings.  His parents were William & Philadelphia Eastwood.

Does anyone have ideas as to where I can look for information about marriages?

I'm also trying to trace the marriage of his son John to a woman called Ann.  Both John & Ann were born about 1839/1840, & supposedly married in 1860.  They had a daughter Phoebe born 1860 in Crockenhill, Dartford.

Finally (!) I'm trying to trace the whereabout of both John senior & family & John junior in the 1861 census.  In 1851 I think they were living in g Depford.  In 1871 they were defintely living in Dartford, where they seemed to stay.  Any help would be much appreicated.

Have you tried freebmd   www.freebmd.org.uk

Another possibility is the IGI Pilot website

Quite a lot of children born to William & Philadelphia if you are interested.

PARENT SEARCH ON IGI PILOT SITE

https://www.familysearch.org

Input surname under "Last Name" and select birth

Input England under "Birthplace" and tick box on the right then select parents

You can show Sussex under Birthplace as most were born there but some were in Kent so you would then have to change counties.  make sure you tick the box so searches are confined to that county

Input fathers name and surname and  mothers christian name  (in Scotland - also input mothers maiden name if known)

Click Search

Also look at this thread by Romanyknaves, one of his JONES married a Phoebe EASTWOOD, maybe not the generation you are looking at but I think you will find a connection,

There is a suggestion that John EASTWOOD and Ann JONES married  02/09/1861 Bexley Kent, I cannot find an entry on GRO records! I can find an entry for a James SEDDON

Familysearch has Phoebe 1860 marrying WilliAM wright IN 1878 when in actual fact she appeared to marry WINGROVE

Phoebe was baptised 06/0281859

Many thanks for these suggestions.

Have been able to trace a birth certificate for John & Ann's 2nd daughter Harriet, born 1862.  This gives her mother's surname as "Reynolds" - & I have yet to trace a GRO reference for a marriage between John Eastwood & Ann Reynolds.

But I shall perservere!

Finding John's father's siblings on the IGI website means I have some more names to trace in the 1861 census, & knowing that Phoebe was christened in Crockenhill, & Harriet born in Hook Hill gives me a much smaller area to be looking for them in (they're unlikely to have gone far in the space of 18 months or so) as the two places are only about 5 miles apart.

Many thanks for all suggestions.
