WILSON/STEWART/HAMILTON/BLACK - Carnwath

I am trying to untangle the following:

JAMES WILSON was born 1825 to Catherine Stewart and died 1871 in Bank Farm, Forth, Scotland. Although he grew up with Catherine and her husband William Wilson, it is possible he was the son of William’s brother, also James. His death certificate in fact reads “illegitimate”. I would very much like to know if anyone can confirm this.

During his life, he met MARY HAMILTON, daughter of WILLIAM HAMILTON and MARION MEIKLE, born 1818 in Carnwath, died 1898 in West Calder, and had one natural son, James Wilson, born 1844. He then apparently had two other natural sons, including another James Wilson born 21 Jan 1848, with another Mary, MARY BLACK, a servant at Cleugh Mill in 1848.

James Wilson (1844), my great grandfather, died at Maybank Cottage, Grant Street, West Calder in 1926.

How did you establish that he was the father to the children with Mary Black?

I got that from a poster on Genealogy.com, although it had always seemed a likelihood from the parish records.

The frustrating thing is that the source, "Mayina", never got back in touch with any helpful confirmation!

So it's not completely established, but a pretty good bet.

I see the 2 sons with Mary Black on the census

Have you checked for a Wilson and Mary Black marriage?

Apparently he didn't marry Mary Black either - she went on to marry a certain Hugh Bryce.

I get the idea James was a bit of a bounder!

Hi, really quite excited to have found this thread! I am great great granddaughter of John Wilson c1846 second illagitimate son of Mary Black and a James Wilson. We can't find baptismal record for John because we reckon the minister was getting a bit hacked off by time he came along! Lol! I've been in touch with a girl from forestry commission and read quite a bit about wilsons and they seemed to like to 'sow their seeds' as they say! The funny thing is Mary was a servant at cleugh mill which eventually was my struthers family mill. We knew nothing about the illegitimacy, my dad doesn't even think my grandad (John Wilson Telfer) would have known. It's our skeleton! Ps we are still in area
