McNamara family
« on: Friday 07 October 11 21:32 BST (UK) »
Hi, i am trying to trace me great great grandfather i think he was born around 1860 in Portaferry, Ballyphilip County Down.
His name was James McNamara his fathers name was John and his mothers name was Mary Monan or Morran.
I have been searching for births but i cant find any births or marriages before 1865.
Thanks :)

Civil registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriages started in 1864 (from 1845 for non-Catholic marriages) so for earlier dates you need to search for church records (if they survive) and other resources.
Have a look at Introduction to Irish Records and My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
