39th Regiment of Foot - Depots, 1823-38
« on: Wednesday 01 February 12 13:50 GMT (UK) »
Hello.
I am researching John Burke (1795-c1868), who was a tailor in the 39th Regiment of Foot. His service, from 1817-38, was entirely "at Home", i.e., he did not go off with detachments of the Regiment to New South Wales in the 1820s or to India afterwards.
I find this man in Tralee, county Kerry in 1823 (from a baptismal record), and until his discharge at Chatham in 1838 (from army lists published in an old Irish newspaper).
My question: what resources can I use to identify stations of the depot for the 39th for the period 1823-1838?
Many thanks, in advance, for any assistance or pointers offered.
Regards,
Alison Kilpatrick

Should answer about their postings up to 1832. They were in India for many years after that.

Also this story:

Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Patricia Downes has certainly done her homework, and her list of references give a lot to work from.
I will probably have to consult the muster rolls, or similar, to see where John Burke was stationed "at Home" whilst the regiments were off in New South Wales and India.
Thank you for this link.
Cheers,
Alison

These are the 39th Foot depot locations for dates that I can readily access, taken from Stations of the British Army published regularly in the newspapers of the time.

Oct 1827: Chatham
Sept 1828 & Jun 1829: Tilbury Fort.
Jul 1829 & Jan 1830: Harwich.
From Apr 1833 to Nov 1839, without a break as far as I can see, the depot was at Chatham.

The United Service Journal for Jan 1832 has the depot at Chatham.

Hello, Rex ... thank you for your work on this question.
When this man was pensioned out in 1838, he indicated his intention to stay in Chatham ... which intention seemed to speak of him having been there already for some time ... as borne out by what you've found.
Thanks again,
Alison

This may have been mentioned by others, but the original source for a lot of the material for the 39th mentoned in this thread is here:

With a bit of fiddling you can download all 177 pages in one go as a PDF.
