Was Porter Ellen Beatrice's maiden name or married name???

When (approx) was she born ?

There is a birth reg on FreeBMD
Ellen Beatrice Porter
Dec qtr 1877
Dartford reg district Kent
2a 417

but there are also other registrations in similar name

A little more info would help- and maybe this should be on the kent board -if that is where the children were born??

Thanks for your help.  The birth registered Dec 1877 in Dartford looks like my grandmother.  This was her maiden name and I think she had several children out of marriage.  again many thanks.

There are census entries for Ellen Porter in 1881 and 1891 born Dartford with parents George Thomas & Martha.

But her name is far from unique so you should really buy a copy of her birth certificate so that we know we are dealing with the correct person.

It is not always possible to identify illegitimate children from the birth index before 1911 as the mothers' maiden name is not included in the entries until that year.

The Ellen that Dawn found is on the 1901 census with John and Martha Goldsmith, and enumerated as Porter, Ellen B age 23.
