The 92nds in India
« on: Monday 30 January 12 21:59 GMT (UK) »
HELP, I have spent some time tracing my family tree but I am not good at knowing where to look for records.
I had a relative [William McIntosh] born 1845 in Scotland he joined the 92nd[?]. He married in Devon just before sailing to India in 1867,a daughter was born in 1872 in Mootan/Mesout [?]. The family returned to Devon in 1876 as William was ill,he died the same year.
How can I find proof of the birth of William's daughter, and his army service. Would his widow have received a pension if he died in service but not through combat?
The widow and daughter moved to the U.S. so I have no British records after William's death.
Thanks for any help.

HI,,,,,William McIntosh b c1846 in Ardclaugh,Nairn,Nairnshire attested for the 92nd regiment of Gordon Highlanders at Edinburgh in 1865,,,he was number 1395,,,,he served in India for nearly 3 years...he served till 1871 before being found unfit for further service. His record also has a brief description of him on enlistment and on discharge,,plus details of the illnesses he contracted,,,but these are difficult to read,,,after leaving the army he was examined in 1872,1873.1874,1875,,presumably to see if he still qualified for his pension,,or just for him to be able to collect his pension.

Hi Gortonboy, Thanks for your help you seem to have found William for me. Thank you. Yes William was born in Ardclash Nairn his father was James both father and son died of diabetes, and both were carpenters. William married Ellen Woodley in on October 7th 1867 a month before both departed for India. A daughter Mary Ellen was born there possibly in 1872. In 1881 Mary is in Devon with her grandmother before joining her mother in Canada or America. I have a copy of a photo of Mary aged 9 in Indian dress. I have followed Mary and her mother to America but the Devon side of her family don't seem to think my William is the right father. There was a William McIntosh who was born married and died in Devon but why then would Mary were Indian clothes?Anyway I want to find my William.
Thanks for your help, where did you find the records?

hi,,just a couple of points,,,,,how do you know when he left for India?  his record states he served for almost 3 years, but does not state which 3 years,,,,,you say he left for India in 1867,,and had a daughter in India in 1872,,,,this is a period of 5 years?

how do you know your Williams father is called James...did you buy the marriage certificate to Ellen Woodley?  if so,,,,how do you know this William is "your" William?
