How to move forward
« on: Monday 30 January 12 21:48 GMT (UK) »
I am hoping that some of the experts on here may be able to give me (and possibly others) some tips on how to move forward with research.

We are all used to going back through the Census, parish records, etc., but how do we go forward from 1911.

I have several relatives in the 1911 census and would love to know where they lived and perhaps what they did after that date.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If any of them were in business then directories such as Kelly's might help or if they lived in London then Electoral registers have recently been added to Ancestry that have been very useful for me.  Local newspapers might provide some details if you can find some online.

Thanks for your reply Heather.  Unfortunately, they all seem to be fairly ordinary workers.  The particular family I am researching at the moment lived in the Nottingham area, and several members worked on the railway and a younger member was a joiner.

Are electoral registers available for other parts of the country?

The local newspaper archives should be helpful, especially if you have some event dates to work with, suchas a marriage or death. Also, check the Nottinghamshire Archives on-line catalogue,  and Trade and Street directories (held at Library, I think). Military records for WW1 may be helpful, also.
Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Births after 1912 give the mothers maiden name ,so you can usually find children of couples born after that date.Deaths after 1969 give their exact date of birth(as long as the informant knew it!)

Buy marriage certs of kids,it will tell yopu if dad is still alive at the time.
Ask other family members(cousins or best of all grandparents)what they know.
Check family photo's (wedding ones) to see if the people are still on it.

Death certs can lead to wills which mention married names of girls.

Electoral rolls/phone books(local libraries- and now some London ones online)can be very useful too.
