Chester Session of Pleas

Hi everyone
I thought that it would be a simple task to find the answer to this question myself, but I have been unable to do so.
Please can anyone tell me what the 'Chester Session of Pleas' was (or still is)?
John Williams was convicted at Chester Session of Pleas on 3rd April 1826 and sentenced to life. He was transported to Van Diemen's Land on the Governor Ready on 26th March 1827.

It seems to be a name for the The Court of Great Sessions which was abolished in 1830, and replaced by the Chester Assizes. Chester remained an assize town until both the assizes and quarter sessions were replaced nationally by Crown courts in 1971

Hi Tofgem, How did you go finding John Williams court case? I'm a descendant and have been looking up his convict record in Tasmania.
