Blagdon or Blaydon
« on: Sunday 29 January 12 15:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have a John Douglass/Douglas who was born abt 1851 or 1852 in either Blaydon or Blagdon, depending on where you look.

1881 census says Blaydon, Durham
1891 census says Blakeden, Northumberland
1901 census says Blagdon, Northumberland
1911 census looks like Blaydon - but other lower case g formations also look like ys - with no county shown.

There are no clear census sightings for this chap using either Blagdon and Blaydon, nor his surname with or without the added s prior to 1881.

Does anyone have any access to the baptismal registers for these places to see if anyone matches the criteria?

Many thanks.

Regards,
Sally

Hi Sally

Have you any other information like his parents or siblings?
There seems to be a few John Douglas but which one??
Any more information you have could help.
Found a potential in Alnwick but need to see if you know
his parents. Thanks

Hi Sandy,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I'm actually helping someone out with their family tree, and don't have too much to go on at the moment. I have no information on siblings/relations of John's and no certification as yet - although I think that I've narrowed the marriage down to a John Douglas/Margaret Ann Bell in Newcastle 1874 - and I was just wondering whether there would be something obvious in a parish register that would point him out.

John was a sometime Cooper by trade, and looking for naming patterns in his children, there is a Frances that occurs quite early on which could be a nod to his mum, and a William but that's all I've got so far.

My friend knows nothing about this family at all, except that she thought there was a money connection with them..... don't we all  ;D

Blagdon was in Stannington Parish.

Living there in 1851 is a family headed by William Douglass, who is a cooper.

Might be worth following up  :-\

Hi Jen,

Yes, I got all hopeful when I saw the family especially as the spouse is a Frances. Sadly, I can't find a John born abt 1852 with them on the 1861/1871 census, so I'm still none the wiser...

Thanks for the reply.
